Hi, this is Maria…I’m from Colombia and this is my last semester in the Media Studies program. I have an undergraduate degree in political science, and a graduate degree in cultural studies, both from Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. My professional career thus far has been in culture, media and politics. I lived in Argentina for almost 5 years working in the cultural and media areas of the Colombian Embassy. I planned a large variety of cultural events such as concerts and art exhibitions, and supported the diplomatic mission in relation to the Argentine media, working almost constantly with artists, writers, filmmakers and journalists. In 2008, I went back to Bogota to start working at the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which one of my main tasks was to follow international issues, with emphasis on Latin America. In August 2010 I arrived in NYC…I live in Park Slope, one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city.
I just started working on a project about displaced people in Colombia. The project is based on intimate interviews and seeks to show the life stories of a group of displaced people that have settled in the four main Colombian cities that receive the majority of the displaced population. I’m looking forward to working on it in this class and see the best ways of addressing and presenting the issue.
