For anyone interested in diy/civic science projects or in exploring issues of biotechnology/synthetic biology, check out this workshop. It’s organized by Genspace, which I just heard about recently and is a community biolab doing interesting citizen science work in Brooklyn.
DIY Bio for Artists & Designers
Wednesday, March 7 – 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Location: 3rd Ward, 195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn
Cost: $50 + $10 Material Fee ($40 + materials if you are a member)
Experiment! The marriage of art and modern biology has produced both beauty and controversy. The goal of this class is to introduce you to the world of BioArt through presentation and hands-on experience. We will explore the groundbreaking works produced by SymbioticA, Eduardo Kac, Joe Davis, and others. You will learn about the breadth of new materials available through advances in synthetic biology and tissue engineering, and what is possible in a studio setting versus a real laboratory. Students will then complete a simple gel electrophoresis project where they ‘paint’ with DNA.
It’s fairly expensive so if you are interested let me know and we could maybe try to negotiate a discount.
