Hey everybody, this is basically the post I put on my blog about my project – I should have posted it here earlier, apologies.

Fostering New Civic Narratives Through Intervention in New Haven

This project is designed to address and confront dominant narratives which construct the public consciousness of the city of New Haven, Connecticut. Specifically with regards to safety and violence, the work is meant to empower “unspoken” voices or enable participation through intervention, allowing residents and youth in particular to express personal narratives of the contested space which may run counter to general perceptions. The intention is to create an alternative “mnemonic enculturation,” and in turn, give the community greater representation and agency previously denied to them, by the displacement public and community mediums and forums. This project will be coordinated with the non-profit Youth Rights Media, and possible collaboration with area artists and/or activists. A short term strategy may need to be implemented to suit the constraints of my Civic Media & Tactical Design spring 2012 course, but this project has the longevity to be executed at a later date for maximum effectiveness. An execution method is still under consideration but will be designed collaboratively with participants.
